Lake Waubesa, Residential Shoreline
Shoreline Wall, Rainwater Garden • McFarland, Wisconsin June 10, 2008More Lake Waubesa Photos
Problem
|
This
residential shoreline was eroding from wave activity and the existing
railroad-tie seawall was in poor condition. Eventually, heavy rainfall
and higher than normal lakeshore water levels caused the timber wall to
break apart. The seawall stood approximately one foot above the water
line and since it did not have steps in it, it was difficult for people
and animals to have access to the lake.
Stormwater:
A section of the backyard was eroded, and contained pockets of standing
water, due to the presence of a stormwater discharge pipe. The
stormwater discharge pipe collects stormwater from the upper end of the
property into the backyard. This heavy volume of stormwater includes
the runoff from the roof, the driveway and the surrounding city
streets.

Solution
|
Shoreline Management:
Remove the old seawall and replace it with Agrecol’s Envirolok
Vegetated Retaining Wall System. A sixty-five foot by three foot
sand/soil bag wall was constructed. The sand/soil bag wall was embedded
below the waterline, and vegetated with emergent zone native plants.
Approximately six hundred native wetland plants were planted along the
new wall. A "walk-in" was constructed along the new shoreline wall, to
allow pedestrian access to the lake itself. Stormwater Management:
A Rainwater Garden was constructed below the stormwater discharge pipe,
to absorb the stormwater and promote infiltration. A 1,000 square foot
native wildflower garden was built and approximately eighteen-hundred
native plants were planted in the new rain garden.

| Construction |
During
construction, a temporary turbidity barrier was installed along the
shoreline to prevent silt and mud from the construction site from
seeping into the lake.
